For the past two weeks or so, I have had a minor medical thing that was bothering me. I kept vacillating — should I try to get in to my PCP and reorganize work during a very busy two weeks?

A week ago Saturday, I had a speaking engagement in the morning, and told myself I’d maybe call urgent care on the lunch break and try to get in. Then the problem abated (a bit) and I decided against urgent care.

Fast forward another week plus, and today I had to admit that the minor problem could become worse if I didn’t do anything.

I called urgent care at 4:10 p.m., was at their office at 5 p.m. (only because I couldn’t make 4:45 given where I live), out within the hour and out of Publix, prescriptions in hand, by 6:45 p.m. The urgent care copay was $25 and the two prescriptions cost less than $5 combined.

It is a gift to have reasonable health insurance. I was thinking about that throughout my little Urgent Care odyssey tonight and as we went online to complete our open enrollment for next year.

Even though I have changed careers and am now an editor for a digital publisher, I will always treasure being a part of the Florida Healthy Kids Corporation for almost 20 years. There are many things I would like to do over about how I managed and the professional choices I made, but even with all of that, interacting with families who were getting the gift of health insurance (and the peace of mind that comes with it) is something I’ll never forget.

The 31-day writing challenge is a series of 5-minute free writes throughout the month of October. Please forgive any spelling/grammatical errors. I’m trying to (for once) be true to the challenge’s purest form.
