5 people with a slide behind them that says “Tell Me Your Story”

I was part of this “Tell Me Your Story” panel today at Florida State University, as part of the Florida Student Association’s annual conference.

Our little group of five people spent time in the green room equivalent of the event, getting to know each other.

Then, during the event, we shared our life stories. We were speaking to a group of college students. As much as I tried not to slip into “middle aged/mom” mode, I may have fallen into that trap once or twice.

But the really meaningful part was that once or twice we referred to this as “our therapy session.” There were quite a few moments where things got pretty deep.

I guess it was a temporary bond — I may not see some of these people again, but it was a reminder of how unique it can be to experience a moment with people you had — at best — a superficial connection with before.

Last night, my husband asked me why I ended up in what was essentially a social work-related degree (Child Development and Family Relations in the College of Home Economics (now renamed the College of Human Sciences).

No disrespect AT ALL meant to my parents — I appreciate them more than I can say, but it’s also accurate to say, “because of the dysfunction. I wanted to save the world.”

I’m not saving the world right now (not that I ever could). Hopefully, I’m saving some sentences from being absolute unreadable disasters (I’m an editor now).

After a year and a half characterized by isolation in many ways, it did my heart good to have a temporary, but deep bond with four other humans.
