REDEEM: 31 days of 5-minute free writes
Here we are 13 days in to the 31-day challenge, and I’m having to force myself to write.
Fortunately, I have S&H Green Stamps on my mind, so that cheers me up a little bit!
S&H Green Stamps are definitely a symbol of my childhood, which means they are not a symbol of today’s kids’ childhoods.
For the uninitiated, S&H Green Stamps were dispensed at the cash register when you made your purchase. There was a precise equation for how many stamps you got to align with how much money you spent.
We all had blank books at home that we would fill up with Green Stamps. This was long before self-adhesive anything, so they had to be moistened to be attached to the book.
I remember feeling a lot of pressure to get them lined up just right (yes, this is a recurring theme with me!). They never did cooperate that much (for me, at least. This phenomenon extended to craft class at school, etc.)
Then you had a catalog of what you could spend your Green Stamps on once you accumulated enough of them.
I don’t remember much about what our family got with the stamps, ironically. Somehow the fun was in watching the little books fill up and thinking about what we would redeem them for.
